De Facto Justice Submits Report to UN on Torture and Ill-Treatment in Türkiye
Date: 22 September 2025
On 22 September 2025, De Facto Justice submitted a comprehensive report to the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.
The submission sheds light on the systematic persecution faced by thousands of individuals in Türkiye since 2016, particularly those associated with the Gülen movement and members of the broader political opposition.
The report documents:
- Arrests based on fabricated evidence
- Torture and ill-treatment including severe beatings, electric shocks, sexual violence, and threats against family members
- Prolonged solitary confinement causing long-term psychological harm
- Denial of medical care, resulting in severe health deterioration and in some cases death
Individual testimonies highlight harrowing cases of enforced disappearances, abductions, denial of treatment for critically ill detainees, and the lasting trauma inflicted on survivors and their families.
The report calls on the international community to:
- End torture and ensure accountability in Türkiye
- Provide international protection and asylum for survivors
- Expand rehabilitation and reparation programs
- Center survivor voices in policymaking
- Strengthen the role of international human rights bodies
De Facto Justice emphasizes that these are not isolated abuses, but part of a deliberate state policy that violates international law. Ending impunity and restoring dignity to victims requires urgent, coordinated global action.
